Black History Month - 2018

Each year beginning on February 1, an entire month of events are planned nationwide honoring the history and contributions of African Americans.

The theme for Black History Month in 2018 is "African Americans in Times of War" honoring those brave men and women who served their countries in the armed forces, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice while defending the American ideals of freedom and democracy.

Rowan students recognize the heritage, accomplishments, and culture of African American in the United States by celebrating Black History Month in the classroom through various lessons.

Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible: Working together to create a positive learning environment for all students!

As we continue working on creating a positive learning environment for all students, we are asking for parents to assist in talking to their children about bringing courage into their day-to-day school life. Courage in school can help improve their learning, performance, and engagement. Courage as defined by Professor Andrew Martin is "perseverance in the face of academic difficulty and fear." Confidence, by contrast, is "perseverance without the presence of fear." Giving them strategies and the encouragement to persist can result in good academic outcomes. Please encourage your children to set goals, to decide what they are aiming for and how to get there.

Motivating Student Uniforms at Rowan Avenue School

We are encouraging all of our students to wear our school uniform to school everyday. School uniforms help to create a safe and positive environment for all students. The school uniform should be navy or khaki pants or skirt with a light, dark blue or white blouse or shirt. Students may also wear their Rowan Avenue T-shirts as part of the uniform. Please send your child to school ready to learn.

School Safety Zone

Providing your child with a safe environment is one of the top priorities of the LAUSD. This is one of the reasons we have a closed school campus during school hours.

It is important for every child to have a current emergency card filled out thoroughly and accurately with the office. Only people identified on the emergency cards will be permitted to pick up students in case of an emergency. Please be aware that anyone checking out students from the school, will be required to present a valid ID.

Preparing for HVAC

We are getting ready for the planing of new air conditioning units for the Main Building. The plan includes providing separate units for each classroom. Plans will begin this summer and last over a year. Please note that part of the South Yard will be taken by the construction crew for storage of materials and equipment and, classrooms will need to be emptied every 2-3 months as they rotate into empty classrooms. We appreciate everyone's patience and understanding.

Celebrations in the Classrooms

LAUSD Food & Water at School

Parents love to contribute to their child's classroom celebrations, especially during the holidays. However, please keep in mind that LAUSD policy does not allow home cooked items nor hot liquids at school. We need to protect students who may have food allergies. Therefore, please check with your child's teacher before bringing "goodies" to share with their classmates. Classrooms are allowed to have celebrations, but we recommend that students' birthdays be recognized during their recess or lunch breaks or the last ten minutes of school.
